Strategic Management Company Easy Jets Strategic Analysis
Introduction The airline industry across the world is characterized by stiff competition. Every player is doing everything possible to acquire the biggest market share and have an advantage over competitors. Business executives in this industry treat strategic management as an important aspect of making a business succeed.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Strategic Management: Company Easy Jetââ¬â¢s Strategic Analysis specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is not unjustified; a critical analysis of the market reveals an array of strategic management tools used by the various players in the industry to keep companies afloat, giving them an advantageous edge over others. This report analyses UKââ¬â¢s airline industry, and how it affects Easy Jetââ¬â¢s strategic management. The industryââ¬â¢s current and future Macro environment The leadership of any profit oriented company is always concerned about the c urrent trends in the environment in which it operates. The UK governmentââ¬â¢s decision to increase corporation tax has affected the operations of many airlines, with some such as Ryanair opting to move their operation bases to other locations (Mintel, 2011b). The recent global economic problems affected most economies in the world, including the UK. The credit crunch slowed economic growth in many countries, with most posting a negative growth curve. The recession had far reaching effects in the credit industry, which is the life line of most economies (Association of European Airlines, 2011) It became exceedingly difficult for companies and other business entities to acquire credit to keep their operations running. It also became difficult for consumers to access credit for their expenses, and this almost brought most credit driven economies to their knees. The effects of the recession are still being felt, and the airline industry is no exception. It is still reeling from the effects of high operational costs worsened by the rising cost of fuel among others (Hitt, Ireland Hoskisson, 2010). Economic growth is still very slow in the UK, and the country posted a 0.2% growth rate in 2011 (Mintel, 2011a).This is a negative growth trend, and the economy is still far from full recovery. The slow economic recovery and growth is doing little to raise consumer confidence. Though interest rates are falling, the restrictions on borrowing only worsen inflation, which by 2011 figures stands at 0.5%. (Mintel, 2011b). The decrease in consumersââ¬â¢ disposable income only makes it more real that they are likely to cut down on spending.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The effect of this on the airline industry is that many customers are likely to abandon high cost carriers for cheaper airlines. With unemployment numbers in the UK projected to hit 3 million so on, (Mintel, 2011a) airlines have a need to adopt strategies that will keep them afloat when their consumers spend less, or decide to ditch them altogether. Consumer perception is fundamental to any business. Consumers in the airline industry have the perception that flying is the fastest way by which one can get to the destination they desire. Most people do not want to be late, and delays and other inconveniences can easily change this consumer perception. Technological advancements are set to change this. Though flying is undoubtedly the fastest way to travel, investment in fast and convenient international rail systems could make a consumer rethink his/her options. When check-in, inspection and boarding time is factored in, for some consumers the better option turns out to be the rail system. There are reasons for each consumerââ¬â¢s decision to use one airline and not the other. For some consumers, cost is an important consideration and for others, convenience and comfort ar e more valuable. Research shows that young adults are more likely to use cost as a determinant in their choice, while older passengers may hinge their decision on convenience and comfort. UKââ¬â¢s demographics show that its population is ageing fast. Statistics show that the 75-84 age group is growing at a faster rate than any other age segment. The younger age segments are increasing at a much slower pace (Mintel, 2011c). Research findings on consumer trends show that the older generation is most likely to choose a carrier on the basis of much more than cost alone (Hitt, Ireland Hoskisson, 2010).This group of people is also working for a longer period of time, and shunning early retirement. This means that they have access to income even in their old age. The young adults, however, almost always consider cost as a prime determinant in their flying decisions. The low cost fliers, therefore, may be faced with a consumer base that is slowly shrinking, due to the growing ageing pop ulation.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Strategic Management: Company Easy Jetââ¬â¢s Strategic Analysis specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The companyââ¬â¢s current position in the competitive environment in the UK, and abroad Easy Jet is a low cost carrier that targets the domestic European (short haul) market though it also operates in North Africa. The airline is one of the top performers in the industry (Mintel, 2011d). It is reported to have airlifted the largest number of passengers in 2011, despite not having the largest fleet (Mintel, 2011e). Easy Jet has the record of being the only airline in Europe that repeatedly recorded increases in passenger numbers over the recession period, even as passengers cut back on traveling (Mintel, 2011d). International travel especially, reduced by a considerably huge margin (Mintel, 2011c). These reports do not purport that the company faces no threats to its sur vival. The competition in the industry is high, and rivalry among the competitors is at its peak. The low cost carriers command almost two thirds of the airline industry in Europe. The players are numerous, most of them having similar strategies and with little differentiation in products. Competitors such as Flybe, Monarch airlines and Ryanair offer similar services to their customers (Mintel, 2011e). They also use expansion as a strategy to acquire a bigger market share. Since they are low cost carriers, cost leadership is a strategy present in almost every companyââ¬â¢s strategy. The consumers in this industry, therefore, wield a lot of power over the companies as they can easily switch from one airline to another. The low cost airlines are expected to increase their market share considerably in the near future (Mintel, 2011f). These projections are likely to trigger an influx of players into the market. Most of the existing carriers are already positioning themselves for this . Ryanair for example, is strategically trying to consolidate its market share. This is by focusing on the routes it already operates, and not necessarily expanding to newer routes. It is also trying to keep its costs low by indicating that it may move its operating base to places in Europe outside the UK. This move is intended to reduce expenses on airport charges and ââ¬Å"tourism taxationâ⬠to which it is exposed in the UK (Mintel, 2011g).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Easy Jetââ¬â¢s operations are profitable, and going by figures provided by the Association of European Airlines (2011), it is doing better than most of its competitors. In the financial year 2009/10, it saw its profits rise by about 70%, an increase fuelled by growth in passenger numbers (Mintel, 2011b). In 2011, it recorded a pretax profit of about à £230 million (Mintel, 2011c). Virgin Atlanticââ¬â¢s profits during the same period increased by 13%, while Ryanair recorded a 29% increase (Association of European Airlines, 2011). Easy Jet is poised to maintain its profitability, though its current expansion strategy puts it at risk, due to the high costs involved. In order to remain ahead of the pack, Easy Jet employs several strategies. First of all, the airline employs low-cost and cost leadership strategies. It offers a low cost, no frills service aimed at the cost-conscious client. It is well known among strategists that the consumerââ¬â¢s perception of a product is cru cial, and this perception can change in an instant (Delfmann, Baum, Auerbach Albers 2005). Armed with this knowledge, the company tries to convince its customers that flying with the airline gives one a unique experience, but at a considerably low cost. It may not be the lowest in the industry, but the consumer needs to be convinced of its uniqueness. It conducts media campaigns to enlighten the consumers on how much money they end up saving by flying with it. The airline also employs the focus strategy, targeting business travelers whose schedules change all the time. It has introduced a flexible package that allows the customer to adjust his/her flight even two hours before the scheduled departure time. This time is a reduction from the previous 1 week, and it is set to have a great appeal to the business community due to its flexibility. This was rolled out in 2010, and the company also has plans to introduce new destinations such as Berlin and Madrid. This move is aimed at attr acting tourists, and the company entered into a partnership with VisitBritain in 2011 so as to sell its services to tourists and increase its market share and profitability (Mintel, 2011d).See index- figure 3.0 for Easy Jet and its competitorsââ¬â¢ market share, figure 4.0 for profits. The Companyââ¬â¢s current resources and capabilities The airline industry, like almost every other sector of the economy is increasingly becoming unstable and to a certain extent, unpredictable (Hitt, Ireland Hoskisson, 2010). Company managers and other business executives can no longer afford to rely on the macro environment to formulate their strategies. Competitive advantage is now seen as achievable through the utilization of an organizationââ¬â¢s internal resources and capabilities (Proctor, 2000).This leads the strategist towards the companyââ¬â¢s internal environment for inspiration for a successful strategy formulation (Haberberg Rieple, 2008). Many times, a companyââ¬â¢s reso urces are mistakenly looked at as the tangible assets. Little regard is given to the intangible resources at its disposal such as market intelligence, consumer information, technology, corporate culture, brand name and reputation (Haberberg Rieple, 2001). This remains the case even though research has proved that they are invaluable to the companyââ¬â¢s competitive power (Yilmaz, 2008).These have been termed by many writers such as Haberberg Rieple (2001 2008) as the only real competitive edge sources that a company can maintain over time. As a provider of low cost flights, Easy Jetââ¬â¢s strong brand name is associated with efficiency and reliability. It enjoys a good reputation as a market leader, and also benefits from customer loyalty. It is the only airline that reported increasing numbers of passengers since 2005 (Mintel, 2011g). Easy Jet offers friendly services, ticketless traveling to cut costs, and most of its operations are paperless (Easy Jet Plc, 2007). Most of its bookings are done online, and the airline does not offer free lunch to passengers. The company has a relatively small fleet, and as of September 2010 the figures stood at 196 planes, with plans to increase this to about 220 by the year 2013 (Mintel, 2011b). The company continues to bank on its capabilities such as the efficient utilization of airports, for a profitable existence and successful expansion of its operations in the industry (Easy Jet Plc, 2007). It is among the leaders in the airline industry, with a market share of about 30.31% (Easy Jet Plc, 2011). Its competitive edge is enhanced by high utilization of its assets, and efficient management of its fleet. Its operations have a cost advantage, and it enjoys economies of scale. The company has a strong financial performance. Its pretax profits in 2011 rose by about à £60 Million (Easy Jet Plc 2011). This was made possible by an 11.8% increase in passenger numbers, and a 4.1% increase in total revenue per seat. Much of a companyââ¬â¢s success is often attributed to its leadership (Haberberg Rieple 2008). A strong balance sheet reflects well on leadership and when things are not going so well, then fingers point at leaders (Smith Golden, 2001). In order to transform an organization from its current position to a desired status, strong leadership is required, leadership that will give guidance to employees and inspire them to perform. Charisma, motivation and intelligence are desirable attributes of a good leader in an organization (Proctor, 2000). Easy Jet has a transformational leadership that spearheads changes in the company to meet changing circumstances in the market. The company is pursuing several strategies that are reflective of this kind of leadership. In a move targeting UK bound tourists and the likely increase in travelers due to the upcoming Olympics, the company has plans to increase its fleet. It has also opened up new routes and rolled out a flexible package for business tr avelers. These transformative undertakings reflect a transformative leadership. Strategic options available to Easy Jet. Diversification Every strategy pursued by a company is aimed at achieving the companyââ¬â¢s goals and objectives, which include giving it a competitive edge over its competitors Delfmann, Baum, Auerbach Albers 2005).The airline should diversify its products in order to attract tourists and other un exploited markets. In terms of acceptability, strategy is acceptable to its shareholders and other stakeholders, because it is likely to increase the companyââ¬â¢s revenue and expand its profit margins. It is also feasible since even though it will require a lot of money to finance, the company is very profitable and it can comfortably meet the costs. Since the companyââ¬â¢s strategic plan is to lead the low-cost airline industry, then a diversification strategy is suitable for the purpose of achieving this goal. International expansion The company recently in vested heavily in new airplanes (Easy Jet Plc 2011), and an international expansion strategy is suitable, since it will be a justification for such a huge investment. Expanding to the international market is feasible since huge capital investments have already been made in the acquisition of new air planes, and these can be used in the new routes. Shareholders and other stakeholders will be inclined to accept it since it may be instrumental in realizing the returns on these investments. It is also bound to raise its revenue and profit margins. The company is in a good position to exploit low-cost international markets, since it is already a low-cost carrier. Diversification, which involves selling new products to the new markets may be a risky move for Easy Jet, but if it is successfully done, the company is set to reap big from it. When expanding to the new routes, the company should concentrate on developing markets for its already existing products such as, popularizing the flexi ble package among tourists. The companyââ¬â¢s Ansoff analysis shows us the possible strategies the company can pursue in order to maintain its profitability.à See Index-Figure 5.0 for Ansoffââ¬â¢s grid. Conclusion A companyââ¬â¢s strategic management may mean its success or failure. It needs to have leaders who understand the market and know the right decisions to make when the need arises. The airline industry has so many players that many airlines are forced to work with others either through alliances or mergers, if only to ensure their survival. The analysis of Easy Jet reveals an industry that forces even the market leaders to look towards other smaller and arguably insignificant players for survival. The poem half-caste Essay Example
The poem half The poem half-caste Paper The poem half-caste Paper In the poem half-caste John Agard uses a variety of metaphors. He refers to things that are multicoloured to get his point across yu mean when Picasso mix red an green is a half-caste canvas John Agard is trying to tell his audience that Picasso doesnt just use one colour in his paintings, he uses a variety of colours, which makes the painting more interesting. This relates to John Agard because he is a mixture of two colours, which makes him something beautiful. Another metaphor John Agard uses is yu mean Tchaikovsky sit down at da piano and mix black key wid white Again John Agard is saying that mixing two colours is a wonderful thing. John Agard repeats half 17 times. He is telling the audience that being half-caste doesnt mean that he is half a person. However he refers him self as half when he says I dream half a dream. No one can dream half a dream. He is being ironic. John Agard is making the audience feel sorry for him. This is because dreaming half a dream is kind of sad, as if his multicoloured background prevents him from fulfilling his dream. The language he uses is Caribbean dialect which is patois. But at the beginning and the end of the poem he uses Standard English. In the poem search for my tongue Sujata Bhatt uses a plant as imagery, and as a metaphor. The plant is dying out. She uses the plant to show her mother tongue is dying out of her mouth just like a plant would. Your mother tongue would rot, rot and die in your mouth. If you dont do anything to the plant, the plant would die. This is the same thing for Sujata Bhatt. If she doesnt do anything to do with Gujarati, her mother tongue would be forgotten. However the plant grows back to life, which means her mother tongue, is doing the same. Sujata Bhatt repeats, tongue and you several times. She is trying to get the audience thinking about what they would do if had they had to learn two languages, and how hard it is. Sujata Bhatt starts off with a rhetorical question you ask me what I mean she is trying to get the audience involved at the beginning of the poem. In half-caste John Agards structure is different to Sujata Bhatts structure. John Agards poem is set out in four stanzas. The first stanza and last stanza are the shortest stanzas with only three lines in. These two stanzas are the only lines that are written in Standard English, as the rest is written in Caribbean dialect. The Caribbean dialect is more like slang and they miss some letters out. For example explain yuself wha yu mean when yu say half-caste John Agard has purposely missed out letters to add to the effect that he is not from England. In Standard English we would say these words yuself and wha and yu with added in letters. We would say yourself and what and you this adds to John Agards style of the poem. John Agard also used a lack of punctuation. But John Agard reads the poem slow. However Sujata Bhatt has just spaced her poem on the page in a line. In verse 17 30 she speaks Gujarati which makes the poem eye catching because there is a different language in the poem. It says in the poem munay thoonky kay aakhee jeebh aakhee bhasha she is telling us that her mother tongue is coming back to life in her dream. Towards the end after she speaks Gujarati and she uses a lot of commas. The use of commas she uses is to build the effect of the plant growing back step by step and the commas help create that image. He says it grows back, a stump of a shoot, grows longer, grows moist, grows strong veins the use of commas helps slow down the atmosphere and creates an image that stage by stage its all coming back to her. The plant which was her mother tongue is growing back. John Agard and Sujata Bhatt feel very strongly about there multicultural backgrounds. If someone tries to insult John Agard about being half-caste he would be very questioning. Like in the poem, its like someone had called him half-caste and John Agard takes it the wrong way and thinks he is half a person. I think that John Agard makes his point very clearly in his poem about how he feels about being multicultural. Sujata Bhatt feels sad that she is loosing her mother tongue and wouldnt want anything or anyone to take that away from her. When she feels like she is loosing that language she makes her point how hard it is speaking two different languages. But when the Gujarati comes back I think she still finds it difficult to learn both languages. Sujata Bhatt helps you to feel that confusion when she puts some Gujarati in her poem. Out of those two poems half-caste and search for my tongue I found search for my tongue a better poem. Sujata Bhatt helps you understand how she feels and because I know how hard it is to speak different languages, that poem interested me more.

Having a Job in High School Has More Benefits Than Just a Paycheck
Having a Job in High School Has More Benefits Than Just a Paycheck SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Having a job used to be a rite of passage for high school students. Theyââ¬â¢d put in some hours during the school year and over the summer and often be able to pay for most of their college expenses with the money they earned. However, as todayââ¬â¢s current high schoolers are facing piles of homework, pressure to excel on sports teams and clubs, and tuition costs that no entry-level job could ever cover, many people are rethinking the concept of high schoolers working. Are there still benefits to having a job in high school?Yes. There are many reasons for a high school student today to have a job, and those benefits extend far beyond just a paycheck. Having a job in high school can not only be a great experience in and of itself, it can also set you up to get even better jobs in college and beyond. In this article, I use my experience of working as a teenager to go over the key benefits of having a high school job. I also end by giving tips on the best jobs for high school students. My High School Work Experience When I was 14 years old, my mother told me that I needed to get a job in order to pay for college. Happy with my sporadic babysitting work, I resisted and told my mother that, no matter what job I got, Iââ¬â¢d never be able to pay for college on a high school workerââ¬â¢s salary. To prove my point, I even got a calculator and showed her itââ¬â¢d take several years of full-time work on a minimum wage salary to cover college costs. My mother dismissed those arguments and told me that there were plenty of other reasons why I should get a job beyond just the paycheck. So I found myself applying for and eventually accepting a job as a swim instructor and lifeguard at my townââ¬â¢s local pool.I ended up working at the pool through all four years of high school and eventually was promoted to a manager position. In the summer, Iââ¬â¢d teach swim lessons in the morning and lifeguard in the afternoon, and during the school year Iââ¬â¢d teach swim lessons weekend mornings and supervise the office occasional weekday evenings. Not everything about the job was great, and there were times I hated jumping in the pool on cold mornings and trying to convince cranky kids to follow my instructions, but overall, like my mother said, I got many benefits from the job beyond just the paycheck (although having spending money of my own was definitely nice). At my job, I made lots of new friends, more than I had made in high school actually. I also gained numerous skills including CPR training and office experience.Additionally, I was also able to use my work experience (as well as my experience as a manager) to stand out from other job applicants in college and get a paid research job as a freshman in college. Having a job in high school gave me work experience, independence, and a better idea of the type of career I wanted, and many other high school students can benefit from having a job.Even if the job doesnââ¬â¢t pay well, or relate to your future career, or seem all that fun, there are still tons of benefits to having a high school job, and weââ¬â¢ll go over them in this article. The 6 Key Benefits of High School Jobs There are numerous benefits to getting a job in high school, some of which are obvious and others less so. This section covers six of the main benefits you can expect to get from having a job as a high school student. #1: Youââ¬â¢ll Earn Money The most obvious benefit to getting a job in high school is that youââ¬â¢ll be making money. Now, since youââ¬â¢re starting at the bottom rung of the ladder, this likely wonââ¬â¢t be a ton of money. When I first started working, I made the princely sum of $5.25 an hour (before taxes), and thatââ¬â¢s not going to make anyone rich. However, even the salaries of low-paying jobs begin to add up over time, and since youââ¬â¢re in high school, your expenses are very low or non-existent. That means you can put all that money towards whatever you want, like a college fund or new clothes or attending concerts, instead of having to pay bills and students loans. My parents recommended that I put half my paychecks in my savings account, so I did that and used the other half to buy an expensive guitar that I could have never have afforded without my job.And even if your high school job is an unpaid internship or volunteer work, not to worry. There are plenty of other benefits of a high school job, which we discuss below. #2: Youââ¬â¢ll Learn New Skills No matter what your first job is, even if it seems incredibly easy and/or incredibly boring, youââ¬â¢re guaranteed to pick up skills you didnââ¬â¢t have before. These skills can include anything from learning how to work a cash register, to building customer service skills, to figuring out the trick to balancing all those restaurant dishes on your arms at once. The skills you learn may not be that interesting to you, and they may not be anything close to the skills you need for your future career, but it never hurts to gain new knowledge. It may end up being interesting or useful to you down the line. At my job, I learned how to teach different swimming strokes, how to administer CPR, and a host of first-aid skills. These are all pretty helpful to know, however; I didnââ¬â¢t end up using most of them in my future jobs. The main skill that was useful for other jobs I had down the line was learning how to use a pretty obscure computer program to track pool visitor numbers. It was clunky and annoying to learn, but, years later, I applied to an internship that also used the same program, and my future boss told me that having that random skill helped me beat out the competition and get the job. So donââ¬â¢t knock any of the skills your job teaches you because they may come in handy someday. #3: Youââ¬â¢ll Gain Work Experience In addition to learning new skills, your high school job will help you gain valuable work experience. Everyone goes through a learning curve when they first begin working as they learn how to manage their time effectively, how to interact with coworkers, how to make sure they get to work on time, etc. No matter what other strengths you have, youââ¬â¢re going to be a pretty bad employee until you figure those basic work skills out. This is why a lot of employers are hesitant to hire someone whoââ¬â¢s never worked before, even if they have great grades and otherwise seem like they could be an excellent worker. A few months after I started working, my job had a mandatory meeting one night that every employee had to go to. However, I didnââ¬â¢t go because, for some reason, I didnââ¬â¢t believe it was really mandatory or important for me to attend that meeting. Afterwards, I got a stern talking to from my boss and it was embarrassing, but itââ¬â¢s better to make those mistakes early on, when the stakes are low and your boss is more likely to be understanding. By college, with four years of work experience under my belt, I definitely wasnââ¬â¢t making those beginner mistakes during my research job. So, even if your high school work experience only amounts to flipping burgers for a summer at your local fast food joint, that can still give you a huge leg up over people with no work experience when you apply to jobs in college and later on. If you start learning the skills to being a good employee in high school, youââ¬â¢ll set yourself up to be an outstanding employee later on down the line. So make your mistakes now instead of later (but donââ¬â¢t make the same mistake I did because that was pretty dumb of me). #4: Youââ¬â¢ll Learn More About What Kind of Career You Want As a high school student, youââ¬â¢ve likely spent a lot of time thinking about the type of career you want to have, even if you havenââ¬â¢t come to any firm conclusions about what you want to do. Thinking about and researching different types of jobs is great, but the best way to figure out what you want to do is to actually try different jobs out. Now, your high school job likely isnââ¬â¢t the job you want to get after you finish school, but itââ¬â¢s still a great way to get a taste of the working world and figure out which things you enjoy in a job and which you donââ¬â¢t. When I was a teenager, I was pretty sure I was going to be a scientific researcher and possibly a professor. That career had nothing to do with my high school job of teaching swim lessons and being a lifeguard. However, I was able to use my high school work experience to get a better idea of what kind of job I would enjoy. One of the best ways to do this was to think about what I liked and what I didnââ¬â¢t like about my high school job. Things I liked included being around people, being active and outside, and working with kids. Things I disliked included knowing I was responsible for the safety of everyone in the pool, giving kids low marks on their swimming tests, and dealing with parents who were angry their child didnââ¬â¢t pass to the next swim level. None of this radically changed my career goals, but it did encourage me to consider having a job that let me do more than just sit at a desk or in a lab, and it made me think more critically about being a professor, where Iââ¬â¢d regularly have to give out low grades and speak with unhappy students and parents. #5: Youââ¬â¢ll Meet New People Unless your high school job involves sorting old moss specimens in a warehouse by yourself (a job I also once had), youââ¬â¢ll meet lots of new people at work.Your coworkers will likely be people you wouldnââ¬â¢t have met otherwise, which is a great way to expand your social circle beyond your high school friends and learn more about different types of people. Many workplaces that employ high school students have a lot of similarly-aged people working there who often develop a strong camaraderie, which means your new coworkers could end up being some of your best friends. However, thereââ¬â¢s also the possibility that you wonââ¬â¢t like someone you work with, whether this is your boss, customers you need to help, or that one coworker who steals everyone elseââ¬â¢s lunch. And even though thatââ¬â¢s not as fun as being friends with everyone you work with, itââ¬â¢ll help prepare you for the many times in the future you have to work with or interact with someone youââ¬â¢re not crazy about. #6: Youââ¬â¢ll Gain Independence One of the most important benefits of teenager jobs is that youââ¬â¢ll achieve a degree of independence you likely havenââ¬â¢t experienced before. As a high school student, youââ¬â¢ve probably lived your entire life with your parents and been under their rules or your schoolââ¬â¢s rules when youââ¬â¢re in class. At a job, youââ¬â¢re deemed responsible enough to manage your own duties, and youââ¬â¢ll have fewer restrictions than you likely do at home or school. As an employee, youââ¬â¢re not just a student or a kid; youââ¬â¢re a full-fledged member of the team whoââ¬â¢s considered smart enough to handle some responsibility. Your teacher wonââ¬â¢t be there to tell you to stop talking and pay attention, and your mom wonââ¬â¢t be there to remind you to clean up after yourself. Youââ¬â¢ll be responsible for taking care of all your job duties yourself. Some people worry that teenagers who have jobs give up their childhood too soon and take on too much responsibility, but in my experience and the experience of my friends who worked as teenagers, I never found this to be true.My job, even when I worked full-time in the summer, still gave me plenty of time to socialize and have fun, and I was proud to feel more ââ¬Å"grown upâ⬠and know I was trusted by my boss to do my job well. Succeeding at a job and earning moneyall on your owncan help you gain a lot of independence and self-confidence, and itââ¬â¢s a great way to help prepare you for college and the future when your responsibilities and independence will only increase. What Are the Best Jobs for Teens? Sometimes high school students and their parents worry about what the ââ¬Å"bestâ⬠job for a teenager to have is or if the job theyââ¬â¢re thinking about taking is good enough. The truth is that most teenager jobs are about the same prestige-wise. Working as a waitress is no better or worse than working in customer service or at a summer camp. Each of those jobs can provide the benefits we discussed in this article. No one is expecting a high schooler to get a job as an investment banker or astrophysicist, so donââ¬â¢t worry about a job that doesnââ¬â¢t seem like itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"good enough.â⬠Many rich and successful people starting out flipping burgers or folding clothes at their local mall. Ditto to people concerned about getting a job in high school that matches the career they want to have. If you can find a job as a high school student thatââ¬â¢s in the field you eventually want to work in, thatââ¬â¢s great, but be aware most high schoolers take jobs that have absolutely nothing to do with their career paths. Thatââ¬â¢s OK since your career goals are likely to change between high school and when you actually begin working full-time. The most important thing is just to get a job so you can get the work experience, new skills and added sense of responsibility. Itââ¬â¢s OK if you donââ¬â¢t think the pay is that great or the job isn't something youââ¬â¢re really interested in. My first job paid very little and had nothing to do with my career goals, but I still got a lot out of it. If possible, Iââ¬â¢d recommend an ââ¬Å"officialâ⬠job as opposed to under the table work like nannying since the former gives you more experience with common workplace tasks like clocking in and out, attending meetings, and working with managers and coworkers. These are all things youââ¬â¢ll probably need to know for future jobs, so itââ¬â¢s good to start getting used to them now.Workplaces known for treating young and new workers well are also a good bet. Finally, when youââ¬â¢re looking at jobs, make sure theyââ¬â¢re convenient for you to get to and will work with your schedule. You donââ¬â¢t want to take a job only to find out a few weeks later that it conflicts with a sport or club you're in. Conclusion: The Benefits of High School Jobs Having a job is not for every high school student; many teenagers these days already have jam-packed schedules between school and sports and clubs. As a junior in high school, I had to cut back on my job hours during the school year because I was feeling overwhelmed with homework. However, for many high school students, there are numerous benefits to be gained by having a job. Not only will high school jobs give you a way to earn some money, meet new people, and gain some more responsibility, you can use your teenager jobs to get yourself a better job in college since can prove to employers youââ¬â¢ve already succeeded at one job. Some people wonder what the best jobs for teens are, but the truth is that any job with a decent boss, fair pay, and work that isnââ¬â¢t too miserable can get you all the benefits we discussed in this article. The most important step is just to go out there and find yourself a job. What's Next? Define and discuss two different theories of poverty Essay
Define and discuss two different theories of poverty - Essay Example The main rationale for our constrained definition is that our focus would be on understanding the theories of poverty in this explorative paper. To develop an understanding of the theories of poverty, we look at the origins: individual and cultural. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on the individual and cultural origins of poverty. We explore each agenda from different research perspectives. This will help us develop a multi-dimensional lens through which we view the subject. We first explore the various factors in understanding poverty from the viewpoint of the Individual theory. Here we identify the interactions of the individual with others in society, the political and regulatory set-up. We also try and understand the psychographic and demographics of the individual and how these factors could affect poverty. The second part of our essay concentrates on identifying the cultural nuances that impact poverty. Again we study the theory from the viewpoint of the various forces that act on the cultural characteristics. We explore the interaction of culture with religion, politics and the structural issues that have influenced poverty. Towards the end, we summarize our perspectives and work on providing a balanced viewpoint. For an individual, poverty can be defined not only in monetary terms but also in terms of stunted capabilities which hamper the achievement of full human potential (Green 2006). Here, poverty amounts to a state of being in a zone of powerlessness and excluded from the decision making prerogatives that accompany people who are in better employment positions. If an individual belongs to this state, then that could possibly translate to living in unhygienic conditions, with poor access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities. We now trace the factors that could cause this existential state. The individual theory states that
